Origins of the Smoking Cap
The Victorian gentleman would wear a smoking cap in the privacy of his home while smoking to prevent his hair from smelling of smoke and to keep his head warm. Influenced by Oriental exoticism, the smoking caps are similar to a pill box hat and a Turkish fez, usually decorated with embroidery. Wives and fiancées would often embroider and embellish the caps for their loved ones in their leisure hours.
